An open letter to my students:
My high school class was challenged by the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War; I am still living with the decisions I made a long time ago. America is in a crisis again and the decisions you make today will affect society and define your character.
You have an opportunity to become a better person and make the world a better place; be the person you would want to be when America needs you the most.
Today you are the pioneers of the virtual classroom. We are relying on social media for education and you are blazing a trail for the future. These are uncharted waters and you are setting a precedent for the world to follow. This is an opportunity for students, teachers and parents to create a productive virtual classroom experience. Your high school class is inheriting a growing list of problems, but you are the brightest and smartest in the virtual world and as a team can deliver solutions for a better tomorrow.
You are also the first class that will have to be the custodian of your own education; not just because of the virus, but also because education is behind the virtual world. To succeed, you will have to own your education and learn independently. The world is always changing and if you don’t take ownership of your future, someone else will own you.
Be extremely careful with your digital footprint; every time you hit the enter button you are leaving a trail about your life for someone to exploit. Use social media to stay connected, ask each other for help and volunteer solutions, and strive to be the best person you can be in virtual reality and life. Use this unique opportunity to explore your interests and find passion; make yourself a better person and make the world a better place.
What can you do? Have a mission in life. My mission is to make the world a better place and be kind to everyone. Living that way enriched my life before the pandemic and has made me more determined and dedicated to spread kindness now. You can’t control what happens to you, but you can control the way you handle it. Navy Seals are trained to be their best in their darkest moments. Rise to your challenges and be your best in every situation. Be the person remembered for courage, strength, integrity and kindness.
When it rains, look for rainbows. When it’s dark, look for stars. It may be hard to find your silver lining during the Coronavirus pandemic, but it’s there. If you look for it, you will find it. But never give up. Never, ever give up.
The future is yours, seize the opportunity to be the best possible you.
